Why can't we follow the standard reading intervention?A typical Moroccan EFL classroom is not equipped to address or remedy the severe reading conditions. Our resources (time, curriculum) or classroom setup does not enable us to completely cater to the poor reader. The skill differences within one group are large, ranging from outstanding to very poor. This is aggravated by the overwhelming workload that our students have at their regular schools, including the extra-curricular activities. It is further emphasized in the youngest students who have yet to master their second (Standard Arabic) and third (French) language. It is no surprise that introducing a non-transparent language in the mix will add to the pressure, and delay the remodeling of the brain, establishing new neural pathways.
